In this section of the Garden Design Crouch End web site we will take a quick tour of some considerations to be taken into account in designing your garden.
Plant layout design.
Picking the right types of plant, will help attract the kind of insects you need to support your garden’s microclimate, attract Butterlies, and even keep the pestss at bay.
Climate
If you have a sunny garden, you do not want your delicate plants to be scorched or burned by prolonged exposure to sun, or delicate buds
damage by winter weather and rain, so a combination of leafy shade and delicate plants may work best, alternatively, trimmed larger plants can be trained to provide a lattice of shade in the summer, while still maintaining privacy from neighbors.
Sun
A well lit garden is a consideration, and also is your house or dwelling facing south, does it get a lot of sun during the day? Fruits can be scorched by the sun, ok perhaps not so major a consideration as warmer climes, but fitting the plants to the climate, including the ability to be resistant to frost, cold and rain, is certainly a consideration.
Texture
Trees, peeling bark, roses, hedges, pond plants, shrubs, cacti, lush tropical leafy plants, window boxes, overhanging vines, flowerbeds, each have their own special “feeling”, we all have our favorites; just like a tree you may feel an affinity for, a well planned garden will take all these factors into account, also future growth is something to consider.
Color
Perhaps inspired themed and blended beds of your favorite colors, beautiful yellow roses, wildflowers, lavender, chrysanthemums, bluebells, on a warm summer afternoon.
Form
Give yourselves a garden with a “shape”, where you can walk along weaving
walkways, and gently meandering paths with your loved one and glass of your favorite drink after work, you will be able to walk barefoot on the grass and appreciate the day.
You may prefer a bold and dynamic contemporary design, or alternatively, you may prefer the magic of a classic look. Matching the design structure to your local community, your current architecture, and also you may need to take local housing association rules into consideration.Irrigation
During a hot dry summer, again, we may not be so concerned about this in London, but watering the garden, can be a daily chore, or a relaxing interlude between getting home from work, turning on the irrigation system with a chilled gin and tonic, and sitting back in a comfortable patio chair to enjoy the evening shade and watch the sprinklers weave their magic spell.
Aroma
Imagine as you walk through your garden, the sell of your own roses, or your beautiful flowerbeds, creating subtle aromas to blend with the singing of the birds and perhaps the trickling sound of water features.
Atmosphere
A magical harmony of plants and landscaping will impress your friends, create many moments of memory for you and your loved ones to treasure and appreciate forever.
Imagine the pride you will feel when you receive compliments from your social and professional circle on your taste and sophistication, even if you have a small garden, a practical use and smart, efficient design may show a different side to you as a person.
Lighting
How will it look at night? What if you are planning an evening meal during the summer? and would like the guests to be able to arrive and enjoy the gradual change from a warm summer evening to a mysterious, sophisticated garden? Trees lit from below, fountains or statues, well lit, possibly sofit lighting and back lighting around the areas you most with to display, and shall we say, even show off a little?
The hard work and planning you put into the design of your Crouch End garden will pay off for years to come!
