Elephant Makes Quite The Impression - ABC News

Take one look at the beautiful and detailed sand drawing of an elephant and the impulse is to believe it was created by one incredibly talented and meticulous artist. But at second glance, the drawing looks perfect, almost too perfect, to be the work of human hands. That’s because the artist doesn’t have hands, in fact she has four legs, weighs over two tons, and created this masterpiece while sound asleep. This is a self portrait.

The drawing is really an imprint, made by Sundara, an eight-year-old Asian elephant who fell asleep at the Chester Zoo in England, leaving an impression so detailed that it is possible to make out the folds in her ears and the ridges in her trunk. Sundara made the imprint during what must have been a deep, almost motionless slumber, something which is highly unusual for an elephant, which generally has to get up in the middle night to switch sides due to its weight, something which in this case contributed to the immaculate detail of the impression.

Will Condiffe, a spokesman for the zoo, told ABC News in a statement:  ”Elephants lie down on their sides to sleep for around four hours a night and usually turn over once, meaning they sleep for approximately two hours on each side. All of our paddocks are covered in a thick layer of sand which gives our herd a nice, soft surface to sleep on. The elephants prefer to sleep on a slight slope, so every couple of days the sand is turned over and banked up into piles for them to lean against.”

It’s unclear what led Sundara to stay motionless for a long enough period to make the impression but one thing is for certain, this is one elephant that people will never forget.

At first we thought that this was some kind of rock carving, or perhaps a mammoth fossil. Very interesting. When the elephant lifted itself up, it must have raised itelf very cleanly and without too much movement.
Lovely image.

Oh No They Didn't! - Kate Middleton topless - kateandwilliam

Well, really, first we had Harry exposing the old botty, and now Kate, caught shall we say, in the old birthday suit. Ah well, however, in the south of France, it is just passe, and other places in Europe. Harry got over his little story pretty quickly and so will Kate. Just a storm in a teacup. Let the girl be. But the journalists did invade her privacy, this was over the line.

We still think that this was really over the line. I mean, this couple will be future heads of state for Great Britain, and it seems that whenever the press have printed scandalous material about on of the UK Royals, the person has not really had the best of times in their life: Princess Margaret, Sarah Ferguson, (toes), Diana, (Say no more), and now Kate. At least this Royal couple have a kind of "protection" of youth, they are doing everything to play the part, and get undermined, by of all things the French!, we think we heard that on the news tonight, they said that the paper that is printing the images of Kate is owned by Berlusconi, part of his media empire. Europeans!

Well, we don't really think that this will bother Kate and William that much, just another storm in a teacup, although, the media will of course bring these pics up on every possible occasion. And what about when she goes to France?
However, she is a young girl, and this was really a big invasion of her privacy.
The photographer made a fortune most likely, the paper sold many copies, and hopefully, they will be made to pay.

BBC Sport - Sport

Having both sets of Olympics in London has been really fantastic. It has been especially great to see that the Paralympics has been promoted significantly as an event in it's own right, not as a poor second cousin to the main Olympics, (which seems so long ago now doesn't it?). The track athletics have been impressive, especially the running blades that have made runners like Oscar Pistorious so effective. Wheelchair rugby is an amazingly robust sport, and we have been watching the equestrian events and more with great enjoyment.
