Identified at last: faces of the Somme - Europe, World - The Independent

Someone on the underground was reading a book called voices of the edwardians, or lost voices of the edwardians, something like that. These things are about a hundred years old now, most likely the interest is there because soon they will be as distant as the boer war, the civil war in the US etc.

It seems with the recent snows, etc, Eurostar, the underground in London, water shortages, that the systems of how we provide the basics, is breaking down, most likely due to some degree of corruption high up.
How else can these things happen over and over?

Psychic Readers - Medium Readers - Clairvoyants - Tarot Experts

Intro:
I am a 4th generation psychic and my psychic readings online are clear, sympathetic, direct and empowering. I will not tell you what to do but will use my clairvoyant and psychic skills to guide and assist you. Working with guides, Tarot, angels and my Egyptian guides I will support, clarify and help you through your reading. I am also able to call on my experience as a Wiccan High Priestess to teach you how to protect yourself and create the magical life you want, in a practical, down-to-earth and effective way.

History:
Born into a long line of psychics, I was tutored by my family elders and was a well-known horse healer and whisperer by the age of 12. As is the tradition, I waited until I was 16 to begin formal training in Wicca and I have been running teaching groups and circles for the last 20 years. I have trained with some of the biggest names in the esoteric and occult world but I credit nature as my greatest teacher. I am initiated into the Ancient Egyptian temple traditions of Thebes and work with the Egyptian rites and pantheon.

A Patio Could Transform Your Crouch End Garden | Garden Design Crouch End

This is a great link to a site about designing gardens in London, very good advice and articles to help you get your garden redesigned in the spring.

In this section of garden design in Crouch End N8, we will discuss the difference it might make to add a patio especially if you might like to eat out in your North London garden.

If you’re fortunate enough to have a garden then it makes sense to try and make good use of it. Unfortunately, many of us take this outdoor space for granted. Instead of taking advantage of it, we may spend too little time on ensuring that it really adds to our lives.

Upcoming Movies 2011

Upcoming Movies 2011

Movie ScreeningsMost Anticipated

A packed slate of anticipated sequels will dominate the 2011 summer. Giant robots, Shia LaBeouf and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley hope to match Transformers: Rise of the Fallen's box office performance, which amassed over $400 million domestically, but failed to win over critics in 2009. Disney has the one-two punch of Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Pixar's Cars 2. Warner Bros. surprise hit The Hangover with Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, and Justin Bartha will be back, but far away from the Vegas strip this time. The X-Men franchise will return to the beginning of Professor X's career with X-Men: First Class and a new batch mutants. Beyond the big budget sequels, George Miller's Happy Feet 2; a third installment of Alvin and the Chipmunks; Journey to the Center of the Earth 2; Spy Kids 4; and A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, will also be released.

Superheroes will have a strong presence on the big screen too. The Green Hornet, starring Seth Rogen and Jay Chou, finally hits theaters in January. Marvel Studios’ Thor, which is helmed by British actor/director Kenneth Branagh, and Captain America: The First Avenger, starring Chris Evans in the title role, will be released in May and July, respectively. Between the two Marvel films, Warner Bros. will unspool the DC Comics adaptation The Green Lantern in June. The 3D film, with strong franchise potential, will star Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, with Martin Campbell directing a script by Greg Berlanti.

More than 25 movies are expected to be released in 3D throughout the year. Titles include: the James Cameron produced Sanctum; untitled Justin Bieber life story and concert movie; Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots; Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch; Paul Bettany starrer Priest; and live-action/CG comedy The Smurfs, with the voice talents of Katy Perry, Jeff Foxworthy, Paul Reubens, and George Lopez.

testy: Definition, Synonyms from Answers.com

(tĕs') pronunciation
adj., -ti·er, -ti·est.
Irritated, impatient, or exasperated; peevish: a testy cab driver; a testy refusal to help.

[Alteration of Middle English testif, headstrong, from Old French testu, from teste, head, from Late Latin testa, skull. See teston.]

testily tes'ti·ly adv.
testiness tes'ti·ness n.

WORD HISTORY   To the casual eye testy and heady seem to have no connection; a more thoughtful examination reveals that both words refer to the head. The head in heady is easy to see in both the form and meanings of the word. The earliest sense, first recorded in a work composed before 1382, is "headlong, headstrong," which is clearly a "head" sense; but so is the better-known current sense "apt to go to the head, intoxicating." To see the head in testy, we must look back to the Old French word testu, the source of our word. Testu is derived from the Old French word teste, "head" (Modern French tête). In English testy developed another sense, "aggressive, contentious," which passed into the sense we are familiar with, "irritable."

Don't be testy today!

French Christmas recipe: Pierre Koffmann's roast goose and celeriac puree | Life and style | The Observer

We would always spend Christmas at my grandparents' farm in the 50s and 60s. We'd go to mass on Christmas Eve, and we'd be in front of the big chimney on Christmas morning. From the beginning I was aware of how important food was at Christmas – there was always a big white tablecloth out, and the best china.

Traditional Christmas pudding: Recipes: Good Food Channel

Method

1. Begin the day before you want to steam the pudding. Take your largest, roomiest mixing bowl and start by putting in the suet, sifted flour and breadcrumbs, spices and sugar. Mix these ingredients very thoroughly together, then gradually mix in all the dried fruit, mixed peel and nuts followed by the apple and the grated orange and lemon zests. Don't forget to tick everything off so as not to leave anything out.

2. Now in a smaller basin measure out the rum, barley wine and stout, then add the eggs and beat these thoroughly together. Next pour this over all the other ingredients, and begin to mix very thoroughly. It's now traditional to gather all the family round, especially the children, and invite everyone to have a really good stir and make a wish! The mixture should have a fairly sloppy consistency - that is, it should fall instantly from the spoon when this is tapped on the side of the bowl. If you think it needs a bit more liquid add a spot more stout. Cover the bowl and leave overnight.

3. Next day pack the mixture into the lightly greased basin, cover it with a double sheet of silicone paper (baking parchment) and a sheet of foil and tie it securely with string (you really need to borrow someone's finger for this!). It's also a good idea to tie a piece of string across the top to make a handle. Place the pudding in a steamer set over a saucepan of simmering water and steam the pudding for 8 hours. Do make sure you keep a regular eye on the water underneath and top it up with boiling water from the kettle from time to time.

4. When the pudding is steamed let it get quite cold, then remove the steam papers and foil and replace them with some fresh ones, again making a string handle for easier manoeuvring. Now your Christmas pudding is all ready for Christmas Day. Keep it in a cool place away from the light. Under the bed in an unheated bedroom is an ideal place.

5. To cook, fill a saucepan quite full with boiling water, put it on the heat and, when it comes back to the boil, place a steamer on top of the pan and turn it down to a gentle simmer. Put the Christmas pudding in the steamer, cover and leave to steam away for 2.25 hours. You'll need to check the water from time to time and maybe top it up a bit.

6. To serve, remove the pudding from the steamer and take off the wrapping. Slide a palette knife all round the pudding, then turn it out on to a warmed plate. Place a suitably sized sprig of holly on top. Now warm a ladleful of brandy over direct heat, and as soon as the brandy is hot ask someone to set light to it. Place the ladle, now gently flaming, on top of the pudding - but don't pour it over until you reach the table. When you do, pour it slowly over the pudding, sides and all, and watch it flame to the cheers of the assembled company! When both flames and cheers have died down, serve the pudding with rum sauce, or rum or brandy butter.

7. If you want to make individual Christmas puddings for gifts, this quantity makes eight 6 oz (175 g) small metal pudding basins. Steam them for 3 hours, then re-steam for 1 hour. They look pretty wrapped in silicone paper and muslin and tied with attractive bows and tags.

Heathrow reopens second runway | News

Stranded passengers at Heathrow airport have been warned not to expect normal service to resume immediately after the airport's second runway reopened on Tuesday afternoon.

Thousands of people have endured uncomfortable nights in the airport's terminals as their travel plans suffer continued disruption due to the snowy weather, but BAA chief executive Colin Matthews warned people not to expect the situation to return to normal immediately just because the second runway has reopened.

"It is good news to see aircraft taking off and landing from two runways but it's really important that passengers understand that doesn't mean the full schedule is going to be restored instantly," he told Sky News.

The airport plans to run about two-thirds of the schedule on Wednesday but it is "absolutely vital" passengers check first before going.

Something seems to be definitely lacking in the planning, one could say:"what were they thinking?", but I don't think they were thinking.

Not even consideration to show some willing.

Eurostar train cancellations: Latest travel advice | Mail Online

Eurostar passengers are facing a third day of disruption as severe weather conditions continue to force cancellations of the high-speed service between London, Paris and Brussels.

However, Eurostar engineers have offered a glimmer of hope for Christmas travel by announcing they have identified the problem which left more than 2,000 passengers trapped in the Channel Tunnel overnight on Friday.

A spokesperson has confirmed that trials are taking place today to make sure that the trains can run through the heavy snow and an announcement about tomorrow's service will be made at 6pm today.
