Damien Hirst splits from Gagosian Gallery - News detail - Flash Art

19.12.2012

Damien Hirst’s relationship with his dealer gallery has come to an end after 17 years. And just one year after the artist’s unprecedented exhibition of his spot paintings at all 11 Gagosian galleries around the world. In a statement released from the gallery, it was said that Damien’s decision was amicable: "It has been a great honour to work with Damien over the last 17 years, culminating with the worldwide showing of the Complete Spot Paintings 1986-2011 at all 11 Gagosian galleries earlier this year. His retrospective at Tate Modern in the summer was the most popular solo show in the history of the museum, drawing close to half a million visitors – an extraordinary achievement. We wish him continued success for the future."

Hirst’s departure follows news that another Gagosian star, Jeff Koons, would be holding an exhibition at rival David Zwirner Gallery in May next year. It has also been reported that Yayoi Kusama was “in the process” of leaving Gagosian.

Carol Vogel of the New York times writes that some see Hirst’s announcement, and other similar defections from prominent galleries, as part of a larger art world trend. Although Gagosian is the most powerful art dealer, the artists he represents are so self-propelled that they arguably don’t need the gallery support. Vogel also points out that while Hirst’s most commercially lucrative period was between 2005 and 2008, it appears that the artworks he made during those peak years are now selling for 30 percent less than their original prices. White Cube will continue to represent Damien Hirst internationally through their galleries in London, Hong Kong and Sao Paulo.
