Organic food 'may not be as nutritious as non-organic alternatives'

We are led to believe organic food is more nutritious than chemically enhanced alternatives – but a new study suggest that it maybe not.

Birds preferred non-organic food Birds preferred non-organic food

When garden birds were given a choice of seeds to eat, they opted for the non-organic variety.

This could be because conventional seeds are more protein-rich which help the birds survive the colder months, researchers said.

‘Our results suggest the current dogma that organic food is preferred to conventional food may not always be true,’ said biologist Ailsa McKenzie of Newcastle University.

‘Conventionally grown crops tend to contain significantly higher levels of protein than those grown organically due to the application of inorganic nitrogen fertilisers in conventional farming systems.

Protein is an essential nutrient in the diet of all birds and mammals and getting enough of it – especially in winter – can be hard.’

The three-year study was carried out at more than 30 gardens across the north of England.

Ms McKenzie said it was important to note their findings did not take into account the long-term health implications of using pesticides, or the often negative impact of conventional farming.

Well, what do you say about this?
One would generally assume we think, that organic means somehow better,
with the understanding, that man messes up when he deals or tries to change nature. ie. Jurassic Park concept. Oh well.
