BBC News - Shop footfall numbers in Scotland 'nose-dive'

It seems that all over the UK, people are being much more careful with their money, or simply do not have the extra income to spend.
Especially in the North, as more and more manufacturing jobs go overseas,
fuel needs change, and major industry and it's demands diminish, times are tough.
In addition, the megastores that we see now, with lower prices, and in many cases, faster service, tend to "vacuum" customers away from the smaller stores, traditional shopping centre or market town centres that were the mainstay of the British high street for many years.
Footfall is being seen to be reduced, at the same time the West End in London has seen an increase in foreign tourists, particularly the Chinese this year, spending more money, due to the poorly performing pound against other currencies.
Christmas is coming, people are concerned about their jobs and the future, it may be that concerns about attitional fuel bills with the possibility of a very cold winter, combined with uncertainties and concerns about going into debt, are all factors contibuting to the current concerns that retailers in the North of the country may have for the holiday shopping season.
