This was the seventh biggest earthquake ever recorded and by some estimates, eight thousand times larger than the recent earthquake in New Zealand.
It set off a Tsunami alert in countries around the Pacific Ocean.
The Asia and Pacific areas are of major concern, a Tsunami event would leave these regions very vulnerable. The earthquake occured eighty miles offshore at approximately three in the afternoon local time, 5:46 GMT, at around twenty miles deep under the Pacific. As the disaster unfolded, millions were left withouth power, people fled office buildings, fires blazed, there were reports of a Nuclear power station on fire, and unfortunately, many many dead.
