Cherie Blair, the then prime minister's wife, was attacked for her closeness to the fitness guru Carole Caplin - especially after it emerged that Ms Caplin had introduced the Blairs to Peter Foster, a convicted conman who helped the couple buy two flats. They insisted they knew nothing of his criminal record.
Birds of a feather, unfortunately also, people at the highest levels tend to move in very limited circles, and because the level of influence that is available to them through status, position or the amount of power that they have, they are under fairly intense scrutiny. Is there not an old saying that there are no hones fortunes, or fortunes honestly made?
It also makes one member of a kind of secret "club", the members protect each other, and it is possible that it has always been that way. Notice that higher ups, be it bankers caught in a scandal, or a minister taking a fall for a political mistake by a department; they never get fired, they resign. To emerge a little while later in another position, let things blow over and things move on.
It just goes with the territory, and unfortunately, with the press now, and technology the way it is, it is much harder to hide now than every before.
