Media_httpnewsbbcimgc_fhuzr

The tectonic plates are in a constant state of shift, there is rock in California US, that exists there, and the only other place in the world, is in the Antarctic.
When a big shift occurs, the land can tear many feet, but for example. California moves away from Nevada, about four inches a year. This gradual build up of pressure finally maxes out and an earthquake can occur. We are acually observing the accumulation of years of pressure.
