Goktay Koraltan and Feras Kilani said other detainees had been badly beaten

Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi's security forces detained and beat up a BBC news team who were trying to reach the strife-torn western city of Zawiya.

Watching John Simpson on the nightly BBC news, it is quite compelling how close professional journalists are willing to get to the heart of the action.
Naturally the considerable degree of danger that they expose themselves to sometimes brings them into a very uncomfortable level of proximity.
What looks exciting and powerful from 500 feet away, becomes all too reall and frightening close up.

Britain so far has displayed a degree of restraint in relation to Libya, basically repatriating UK citizens, or bringing them to Malta. However, should journalists be captured, then the situation could be cranked over into a new level of danger for all, and heighten diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

For any journalist in this country divided by war, how much news is news worth in terms of personal endangerment, may once again be the question.
