BBC News - Japan earthquake: New footage of quake impact in Kashima

We remember living south of San Francisco in the USA for a long period, the earthquakes were more like gentle rumblings than anything like this.
One night the house started shaking, it took about 10-15 seconds to process and realize what was going on, it was not until the chandilier type light in the hall way started to swing that I realized this was very serious, and the best move was to run outside and bang on the windows to warn the other occupants in the house. If a house slants sideways and the doors are closed, the door will jam shut. This happened to the owner of the Winchester Mystery house in San Jose during the 1906 earthquake. The room moved sidways and the occupant was trapped in her room for about fifteen hours according to the tour guide.
